When is Jökulsárlón | Glacier Lagoon Open?
The café at Jökulsárlón is open year-round, except 24–26 December and 31 December–2 January.
Opening hours:
• June–September: 09:00–19:00
• October–November: 09:00–18:00
• December–February: 09:00–17:00
• March–May: 09:00–18:00Boat tours usually operate from early May through October, depending on weather and ice conditions.
How many boat tours are offered each day?
During the summer season (June–August), tours depart frequently throughout the day, usually at least every 30 minutes. We have 4 amphibian boats so they can be very frequent.
The Zodiac has 10 depertures during high season.
How long do the tours take?
Amphibian Boat Tour: 30–40 minutes
Zodiac Tour: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
Do I need to book in advance?
Advance booking is recommended, especially during the summer season. Groups of 12 or more should contact booking@jokulsarlon.is.
Where is Jökulsárlón located?
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is located in Southeast Iceland, directly off Route 1 (the Ring Road), approximately 370 km east of Reykjavík.
Can children join the tours?
Yes. Amphibian tours are suitable for all ages. Children must be at least 130 cm (4 ft 3 in) tall to join a Zodiac tour.
Is it cold at Jökulsárlón?
Yes, even during summer. We recommend warm layered clothing, a hat, gloves, and waterproof outerwear for Amphibian tours.
Is the tour safe?
Yes. All passengers are provided with safety equipment, including life jackets. Zodiac passengers are also provided with flotation suits.
Can I bring my own boat or kayak?
We do not recommend bringing private boats or kayaks onto the lagoon. Icebergs can shift, break apart, and roll unexpectedly.
What can I expect during a boat tour?
Both Amphibian and Zodiac tours offer close-up views of the icebergs, glacier, and surrounding landscape. Guides provide information about the glacier, lagoon, wildlife, and local history.
Is camping allowed at Jökulsárlón?
No. Camping is not permitted at the lagoon, as it is part of Vatnajökull National Park. Nearby campsites are available.
What is the cancellation policy?
Individuals can get a full refund if cancelled 24 hours or more before the tour, from 23 until 2 hours before the tour you get a 50% refund.
How far is Diamond Beach?
Diamond Beach is located just across the road from Jökulsárlón, approximately 500 metres away.
Are there toilets and other facilities nearby?
Yes. Public toilets, a café, souvenir shop, parking area, and accessible parking spaces are available.
Is Jökulsárlón accessible for visitors with disabilities?
Yes. Viewing areas, pathways, the café, and many facilities are accessible.
Are drones allowed?
Drones are not permitted without permission from Vatnajökull National Park.
What happens if my tour is cancelled due to weather?
If a tour is cancelled for safety reasons, you can rebook or receive a full refund.
Can I see seals?
Yes. Seals are frequently seen resting on icebergs or swimming in the lagoon.
What is available at the café?
The café offers sandwiches, lobster soup, cakes, pastries, hot and cold drinks, vegetarian and vegan options, and souvenirs.
Our lobster soup is a guest favorite, along with our freshly made sandwiches.
We recommend trying our lobster soup, Icelandic hot dog, or one of our freshly made sandwiches—especially the tuna spicy or honey mustard salmon.Do I need to pay for parking?
Yes. Parking fees are managed by Vatnajökull National Park and paid through the Parka app.
Is there always the same amount of ice in the lagoon?
No. Ice conditions change daily depending on glacier activity, weather, tides, and ocean currents.
